After years of getting oil stains on my “good” jeans, when I just popped into the garage to do a little job, investing in a quality pair of overalls just made sense.  Carhartt are made from bomb proof duck canvas.  They are extremely durable as a start point - and more importantly can be repaired and modified if necessary over the years.  If your tinkering takes you into situations where you come into contact with fluids then you can simply make your overalls water resistant by applying Otter Wax to the canvas.  That can also be completely custom to your needs.  Working in the garden over winter? - just wax your overalls from the knees down.  Working on something where you get spray towards you - just wax the front of the overalls etc.
