Tinker and Fix "The Frank" Tool Roll

Regular price £0.00 £34.95 Sale

My Grandfather was born in Yorkshire in 1914.  He saw an enormous amount of change in his life.  From the first motor cars, to space flight and the mobile phone.  He was also part of a generation of fixers brought about by a fascination with the technological changes around them, and by the financial reality of if it broke, buying a new one wasn’t a possibility.  As a result everything mechanical he owned was always oiled and maintained.  This was a man that cleaned his lawnmower after every use - the thing looked better after 10 years than it did when new.

Sometime in the late 1940’s, he made a tool roll to keep his hard earned tools safe and clean.  He was an Army lorry driver during the War and his design was inspired by the tool rolls on the Bedford lorries he drove.  When he was in his mid 90’s he passed all of his tools to me (not before then, as he still had jobs to do ......). Bolts, screws and split pins all separated and kept in their own little cloth bags.  A very random tool bag and that tool roll.  The more I used the tool roll, the more I found it to be just ‘right’.  It could hold the right mix of tools for a job - it was the Goldilocks size and even fit perfectly flat in a modern tool cabinet draw.

But being almost 80 years old, the tool roll was starting to suffer.  It had been made out of what he had to hand - some cotton, thread and an old shoe lace.  I started to think how great it would be a have a ‘modern’ version of it - made from a heavier weight canvas and with a few tweaks to the design. ‘The Frank’ tool roll is that product.  The dimension and shape haven’t been changed.  We’ve upped the weight of the fabric - to make sure your grand children get the option to use it - and we’ve evolved the closure to make sure things stay put.

Each tool roll is hand crafted in Britain using 10oz waxed cotton fabric.  This fabric is extremely durable and doesn't absorb moisture so your tools stay dry in a lightly oiled environment.  To keep everything secure we've used solid cast brass D rings and a heavy weight cotton strap.

The roll is 47cm wide and 27cm high and will handle tools up to around 25cm in length.

Perfect for use in a vehicle, the garage or home.

Ships in a box making it a great gift.
