I prefer the look of a raw/forged finish on steel. But those surfaces start to rust fairly quickly if left completely untreated.
My go to has always been a beeswax based wax, and we used to import a version from the USA. Good product ....rubbish company to deal with and lets just leave that conversation there.
We recently started stocking a Leather Balm and Wood Butter from a UK company called The Wild Wanderer. I've been really impressed by their wax products and asked them if they could make a version that would be more durable on metal surfaces.
This is the result - Axe Wax - yes, its great at protecting axe heads but think of it as a surface treatment for anything steel.
Apply sparingly with a clean cloth and then leave it for 20mins or so before buffing off. It will feel slightly gummy initially and then forms a hardish surface. It contains Carnauba wax (the stuff that used to be used in car wax before everything went ceramic.) The key thing is the Carnauba is classed as a "hard" wax, meaning it has a more durable finish when applied to metal.
You'll need to repeat apply over time and that will be dependent on conditions and usage.
There's no reason why this product can't be applied to wood or leather as well, although I prefer using their other formulations for this personally.
Supplied in a 60g tin.
