Gransfors Bruk Small Splitting Axe

After years of trying we have now been excepted as one of the handful of UK stockists of Gransfors Bruk.  Stock should be arriving towards the end of September 2024 ... but we were keen to get the information up on the website as soon as everything was confirmed. 

Although I grew up reading Lofty Wiseman's SAS Survival Handbook, in the UK the axe is mainly a tool we use for processing firewood.  Unfortunately, for most of us, that doesn't mean felling trees, that means buying logs and "adjusting" them for either your open fire or log burner.

To do that you do need a splitting axe which has more of a wedge shape to the head.  Its shape is designed to force apart the wood fibres rather than cut through them.  If you are splitting small logs, or halves into quarters, you don't need a full size splitting maul.  This is where a splitting hatchet is perfect.

The head weighs 3.5 lbs, so has a lot more heft to it than a forest axe  The 23.5 inch hickory handle allows the axe to be swung with one or two hands.  The neck of the axe is fitted with a metal collar to protect the handle from overstriking, or the split log bouncing up. 

They are supplied with a leather sheath.

Gransfors Bruk have been making axes in Sweden for over 100 years.  All their axes are still made in their factory in the town of Gransfors.  Each head is marked with the initials of the blacksmith who forged them and they are designed to last a lifetime.  For us they are the best quality mass produced axes available on the market.
