Niwaki Hori Hori
Niwaki Hori Hori
The Niwaki Hori Hori is a Japanese trowel. Whilst it does look like a knife and many people refer to it as the Hori Hori garden knife, it is designed for digging rather than cutting.
Regardless of what you call it - the Hori Hori is a great all-round weeder, bulb-planter supreme and general subterranean rummager. Essentially, the Hori Hori has an extraordinary ability to very quickly become people's favourite tool in the garden!
The carbon steel blade runs right into the handle, so it's tough and strong, but it's not invincible so please do be aware of yanking it back if you are in heavy or clay soil.
Product details:
- Carbon steel blade which is approx 7" (17cm)
- Beech wood handle
- Comes with a tough canvas sheath or you can upgrade to a leather holster - just select this on the drop down menu.
We sell a variety of different Hori Hori's including a stainless steel Hori Hori or a stainless steel serrated blade Hori Hori.

I used my birthday money on this and a Niwaki hand hoe when visiting the Market Harborough Eco Village. I've only used it once but am impressed and can see it's going to give me years of good service. The handle is FSC marked which is important and the blade very strong. I've used it to easily clear weeds from inside my 1/2 greenhouse (my long handled small headed hoe always risks breaking the glass as I clatter around) and even clear bindweed top growth. I think I might invest in the leather holster as the canvas one, whilst strong, is going to get dirty pretty quick. Very pleased and has helped me start to build quality into my shed collection.
I wasn't sure about these tools but saw my neighbour using one and decided to go for it. Wish I had got one of these years ago. It cuts into soil with ease to remove weeds with little damage to the surrounding turf, great for use when potting plants, the edge is super sharp for opening compost sacks. Really good all rounder and well worth the money. Also very robust in its construction, can't see it being broken very easily. Very happy!
